Does Vein Therapy Hurt?

Each sclerotherapy injection is administered through tiny needles. To reduce discomfort, we apply ice before treatment to help distract from the poke of the needle and reduce the risk of bruising. At worst, some patients describe a feeling of a rubber band snapping against their skin with laser therapy. Our lasers have a specialized cooling device built in, which makes the procedure much more comfortable. We also offer to prescribe topical anesthetic so not much discomfort is felt at all.
Common side effects of vein therapy include redness, swelling, soreness, and scabbing, though this typically subsides. Infrequent side effects include permanent scarring, new vein formation, pigment stains, or ulcers. Please check out post-care vein therapy guidelines for aftercare instructions.
Depending on the treatment area, exercise is not advised for at least seven days. Compression stockings may be recommended for at least seven days for leg veins. Sun exposure should be minimal for 6-8 weeks after treatment, and sunscreen with an SPF greater than 30 SPF should be used during any sun exposure.
